in accordance with ABNT NBR 16.296 and is audited by an INMETRO-approved body

The Brazilian leather industry has a new sustainability benchmark. The JBS Couros plant in Marabá (PA) is the first tannery focused on wet blue leather production to receive the Gold seal from the Brazilian Leather Sustainability Certification (CSCB) organization, audited by an INMETRO-approved body, which confirms the factory uses best economic, social and environmental practices in accordance with ABNT NBR 16.296.

The audit assessed environmental, social, economic and sustainable aspects across the operation and the Marabá plant was awarded an average score of 97% across 160 audited items with not a single non-conformity. According to the CSCB, a sustainable tannery is one that generates positive financial outcomes, reduces environmental impacts, provides safe working conditions and interacts with other stakeholders.

The certification ceremony at the JBS Couros factory in Marabá was attended by company directors, Team Members and local officials, as well as representatives from the CSCB and the Brazilian Tanning Industry Center (CICB).

Created in 2009, JBS Couros produces leather in the wet blue, crust and finished product stages. The Marabá tannery was set up 11 years ago and has over 150 Team Members producing wet blue leather. After finishing, the output is used by the automobile, furniture and footwear industries.

The facility will follow an audit, assessment and recertification schedule over the next three years to maintain its Gold seal or achieve the Diamond seal, underlining its commitment to improving its processes. “The engagement generated by this certification, further consolidating a culture of sustainability, has been one of the issues highlighted at technical and scientific congresses where the seal is presented”, said Álvaro Flores, CSCB technical coordinator. In 2019 alone, the CSCB was invited to share its experiences at events in Dresden (Germany), New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Milan.
