Dialog with Stakeholders

JBS’s stakeholder relationships make an important contribution towards business sustainability. One of the company’s principles is to build trust with the many markets it interacts with on a day-to-day basis. JBS is aware of the social role it plays in each of these markets and has taken steps to support social, economic and environmental development. The company is also open to dialogue and always respects local cultures.

In-house

  • Environment Week

JBS held its first Environment Week in 2015. Every year, the event is part of the World Environment Day celebrations.  The goal is to engage employees with issues that area strategic to the company’s sustainability efforts, such as waste management, efficient water and energy usage, climate change, guaranteed raw material sourcing, animal welfare and corporate transparency, among others.

Customers and suppliers

  • Product QR codes

Friboi customers and consumers can find the name and location of the farms that produced the raw material for the unprocessed beef products they purchase. They can easily access this information via their smartphones or over the Internet:

– Using a smartphone, they can simply read the QR Code on all JBS branded meat packaging.

– Via the www.confiancadesdeaorigemjbs.com.br website, all they need to do is insert the production date and FIS (Federal Inspection Service) number.

Civil society

  • Institutional Commitments

JBS is involved with a number of major local and global forums that discuss a range of sustainability issues with organized civil society and other members of the value chain.  Some of these initiatives in Brazil are:

Leather Working Group (LWG) – This is a leather industry initiative involving international companies, tanners, suppliers and retailers to promote industry-appropriate and sustainable environmental management practices. JBS Couros actively participates in discussions related to industry best practices and is currently a member of the LWG technical committee.

National Pact Institute for the Eradication of Slave Labor (InPACTO) –  An initiative intended to strengthen efforts to combat slave labor in Brazil.  JBS has been a signatory of the National Pact Institute for the Eradication of Slave Labor in Brazil since 2007 and a member of the Institute since 2014.

Communities

  • Germinare Institute

JBS is the largest backer of the Germinare Institute, which is located in São Paulo/SP and was created in 2009 by J&F Investments, the company’s largest shareholder. The Institute was created to train business leaders. It therefore offers children and teenagers free, full-time education, supplementing the traditional curricula with activities that encourage an entrepreneurial attitude and provide management training.  This methodology is applied to Basic II and Middle School classes and is approved by the Ministry of Education.  Find out more about the Germinare Institute here.

  • Special Chefs

JBS is one of the sponsors of the Special Chefs project, an initiative that uses gastronomy to improve social inclusion for youngsters with Down Syndrome in Brazil. The project offers free workshops involving well-known chefs who teach the students how to use ingredients and follow a recipe, which helps them build greater autonomy and confidence while developing their self-esteem and motor coordination skills.

Friboi has been partnering the initiative since 2013, providing financial support, supplying products and promoting the Institute’s activities. Find out more about the project here.
