Sao Paulo, September 30, 2016 – Tomorrow (1/10) JBS is launching the Belén Beef Plant, located in the province of Concepción (Paraguai). A US$ 80 million investment, this is the company’s first unit designed from the ground up. “We are very happy. This is the first unit where we started with a design where we could apply not only the best possible construction methods but also implement best practices from our units around the world”, said Wesley Batista, JBS Global CEO.
Work at the new plant began less than a year ago. Both the unit’s architectural design and its production system include innovations. “We used a multidisciplinary group to identify opportunities that will allow us to operate with cutting edge processes and systems, guaranteeing production efficiency and higher yields that can be replicated at other Group units”, said Felipe Azarias, president of JBS Paraguay.
The JBS unit in Belén will also include a modern water treatment system which will be able to reuse waste water to supply various day-to-day activities. The unit also implemented the world’s best animal well-being practices, including a new corral layout and new pre-slaughter process, backed and approved by Temple Grandin, a global reference in the industry,
With the new plant in Paraguay, JBS will lead the local beef market. The unit will increase the company’s processing capacity by 87.5%, or up to 3 thousand head a day, and generate approximately 1.2 thousand direct and 4 thousand indirect jobs. “We also made significant investments in employee ergonomics and safety and it is the first business to obtain a number of certificates in Paraguay, such as the OHSAS 18001”, said Azarias.
The JBS expansion in Paraguay reflects the country’s economic potential and the other positive factors the country offers. Azarias highlighted raw material availability: “The city of Belén is sited in an excellent location with the largest concentration of cattle in Paraguay within a 200 kilometer radius of the plant”, he said. Another factor is the rising number of cattle in Paraguay, which rose 14% in the past 5 years, which is above average for the Mercosur region.
Paraguay is also a stand-out location for food exporters. “There are abundant raw materials and natural resources, robust sanitation conditions, efficient labor and competitive costs”, said Felipe Azarias. “We have noted a significant increase in exports over the past few years, but we also saw the short-term potential of the Paraguayan market, in addition to an environment ripe for expansion”, he added.
JBS arrived in Paraguay in 2009 with two beef processing units in Assunción and San António, employing around a thousand people at both plants. JBS units in Paraguay are able to meet the high standards required by both the domestic and international markets.
