Trough fattening is already used at five feedlots across Brazil and can generate quality bonuses for livestock breeders

São Paulo, August 6, 2019 – Friboi has recently unveiled a new feedlot in Nova Canaã do Norte, in the state of Mato Grosso, with a two-turn structure for 10 thousand head of cattle. Launched in 2010, the Company’s pen fattening operation has supplied 2 million animals to Friboi’s meatpacking plants.

The feedlot is equipped with a modern and functional corral, a management system integrated with production, an extensive staff of veterinarians, zoo technicians and nutritionists that follow each animal’s daily progress and provides other services that support cattle breeders during the fattening process and follow all the global animal welfare protocols.

Friboi also has four other plants that use this model: Castilho and Guaiçara, in São Paulo; Lucas do Rio Verde, in Mato Grosso; and Terenos, in Mato Grosso do Sul. Together, these plants are capable of fattening over 150 thousand head of cattle per year.

The service offers four options, based on the producer’s requirements: 1) Daily: fixed daily rates; 2) Partnership: the animal is weighed at entry and the producer is paid for the unfattened arrobas at fattened prices; 3) Arroba increase: a fixed rate is paid for the arrobas gained in the feedlot; 4) Feed per kilo: the cattle breeder pays for each kilo of feed consumed by the animal.

This business model allows cattle breeders to shorten the breeding cycle and increase capacity and revenue. Farmers only pay input costs, such as feed and shipping, once the animals have been slaughtered. There is also an opportunity to agree spot market or futures prices.

Clients using the Friboi feedlot see yields of up to 15% and can also earn bonuses based on the Company’s quality protocols: over 70% of carcasses fattened using this feedlot model are classified as “green light” – the best possible rating – on the Friboi Quality Ranking.
