JBS PUBLISHES REPORT PROVING ADOPTION OF BEST PRACTICES DURING CATTLE PURCHASES FROM THE AMAZON BIOME

The Company achieved 99.99% social and environmental compliance, its best result since it began auditing cattle purchases from suppliers in the Amazon, in 2014, in accordance with the Public Livestock Commitment

 

Sao Paulo, November 7, 2018 – JBS is releasing its annual independent audit report today (07) showing that 99.99% of its cattle purchases from farms located in the Amazon biome complied with the Public Livestock Commitment and its Responsible Raw Material Procurement Policy in 2017.

 

This was an improvement on the 2016 report, when the Company recorded 99.97% compliance. The data were evaluated by DNV GL, independent auditors known worldwide for their social and environmental audit work.

 

To the Public Livestock Commitment criteria include not purchasing animals from farms where deforestation has taken place, that are under embargo from Ibama, that use protected areas – such as indigenous land or environmental conservation units – to breed cattle or that use labor analogous to slavery.

 

DNV GL verified over 9.9 thousand cattle procurement transactions at 21 JBS units the Company manages in the Amazon Biome last year.

 

The Company has been developing a system that monitors and verifies conditions on all cattle supplier properties to ensure that all raw materials purchases comply with the social and environmental criteria. Every day, JBS analyzes more than 80,000 cattle suppliers in Brazil – over 49 thousand in the Amazon region alone – using satellite imagery, farm geo-referencing data and information from government agencies. JBS’s monitoring system analyzes satellite imagery covering approximately 59 million hectares (590,000 km2) and 400 municipal regions in the Amazon region to map supplier farms.

 

“We are committed to continuously developing supply chain monitoring and control systems and to only buying from farmers who comply with the our sustainability guidelines and ethical code. The Company also has strict controls and ongoing audits to ensure it sources meat from farms that are operating in accordance with environmental and labor laws”, said Márcio Nappo, JBS’s Sustainability director.

 

JBS also believes other meatpacking companies should adopt social and environmental raw material procurement criteria and sign up to similar agreements and commitments . “It is important that other companies sign up to the Public Livestock Commitment, which should be an industry standard for responsible beef production in Brazil”, said the executive.
