JBS OPENS TWO NEW ANALYSIS LABORATORIES AND MODERNIZES ANOTHER SIX IN BRAZIL

Focusing on food quality and safety, the initiative is part of the Quality Management System protocol

Sao Paulo, May 16, 2018 – JBS is committed to continuously improving food quality and safety and as part of this commitment, it has just opened two analysis laboratories – one in Campo Grande (MS) and another in Redenção (PA). The Company is also modernizing another six laboratories in Brazil and obtaining ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory certification for these units. Altogether, around R$ 5 million has been invested in refurbishment, construction and equipment purchases.

“For many years, JBS has focused on improving food quality and safety and the Company keeps a close eye on disruptive livestock technologies”, said Emilia Raucci, JBS Carnes’ Quality Assurance director.

The new laboratories will be automated and use digital technologies, increasing their capacity to analyze all output using predictive visibility diagnostics, which will further increase the speed and safety with which they can detect ant non-conformities. “We are very proud to be the first to take this path”, said Raucci.

Laboratories in Campo Grande/MS and Redenção/PA

The Campo Grande laboratory, which opened in February, has an area that focuses on Microbiological, Physical and Chemical analyses. The laboratory’s goal is to perform around 4.5 thousand analyses a month, serving the units in Mato Grosso do Sul, Campo Grande I and II, Nova Andradina, Ponta Porã, Anastácio and Naviraí.

Furthermore, the laboratory will start molecular biology analyses for certain types of microorganism (DNA testing) on beef and environment samples in the second half of 2018, which will be able to identify microorganisms using a PCR technique, i.e., in real time. “This analysis is a preventive part of our controls and processes and helps mitigate any possible contamination. This means we can guarantee consumers receive high quality products”, said Raucci.

The Redenção laboratory is also expected to start analyses in the second half of the year. This site will also carry out Microbiological, Physical and Chemical analyses for the JBS Carnes units in no Pará (Redenção, Marabá, Tucumã, Santana do Araguaia) and in Tocantins (Redenção, Marabá, Tucumã, Santana do Araguaia and Araguaiana). The laboratory will carry out an average of 2.5 thousand analyses a month.

JBS believes that jointly, the laboratories will be able to carry out 50 thousand diagnoses a month.

Proprietary Laboratory structure

JBS has 10 in-house laboratories that are responsible for carrying out microbiological, physical and chemical analyses and testing chemical waste to support routine operations as well as customer and government requirements (self-controls). The laboratories are strategically located so they are able to serve JBS Carnes units nationwide.
