JBS COUROS STARTS NEW CERTIFICATION PROCESS

CSCB consolidates industry commitment to sustainability

São Paulo, October 26, 2018 – JBS Couros is moving ahead along its path to sustainability. The Company has just joined the Brazilian Leather Sustainability Certificate – Certificação de Sustentabilidade do Couro Brasileiro (CSCB) program, which aims to consolidate industry engagement with best sustainability practices.

The Company plans to obtain certification by next year for seven of its Brazil plants: Barra do Garças (MT), Itumbiara (GO), Lins (SP), Marabá (PA), Montenegro (RS), Naviraí (MS) and Nova Andradina (MS). “The units are already implementing training course for our teams to put in place any changes that might be required to comply with all CSCB requirements, said Paulo Reimman, Quality director at JBS Couros.

The initiative, organized by the Center for Brazilian Tannery Companies – Centro das Indústrias de Curtumes do Brasil (CICB) – complies with the guidelines issued by the Brazilian Compliance Evaluation System – Sistema Brasileiro de Avaliação da Conformidade (BCES) – and is implemented by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology – Instituto Nacional de Metrologia, Qualidade e Tecnologia (Inmetro). The Institute sets the standards that must be complied with during the sustainability compliance assessment for the leather production process.

Economic, environmental, social and sustainability management factors will all be evaluated and graded either  gold, silver or bronze.  According to the CSCB, a sustainable tannery generates positive financial results, reduces its environmental impact, provides safe working conditions and interacts with other stakeholders.

JBS Couros already sets the bar for sustainability across the sector and has already been recognized for its compliance with strict quality standards with certificates from ISO and the Leather Working Group (LWG).
