JBS BIODIESEL RECOVERS OVER 2 MILLION LITERS OF COOKING OIL IN 2018

Sao Paulo, September 24, 2018 – JBS Biodiesel recovered 2.3 million liters of used cooking oil over the first eight months of 2018. This is already 15% more than the amount of oil collected in 2017 and the company expects to recover a total 3 million liters by the end of the year.

 

This was result was possible because, partnering with JBS Ambiental, the company created the Óleo Amigo (“Friendly Oil”) project to increase society’s awareness of the importance of correctly disposing of used oil. Launched in March 2017 in the city of Lins, interior of Sao Paulo, the initiative includes a partnership with the Municipal Education Department and was included in school activities locally and in another 20 nearby cities, such as Bauru, Guaiçara, Promissão and others. Altogether, over 30 institutions and 13 thousand students have been impacted by the program.

 

Through the partnership, the company pays schools for the cooking oil they collect. This helps them invest in infrastructure, such as libraries and schoolroom refurbishment, and buy books and other material and equipment.

 

The program currently operates 300 collection points at venues like businesses, hospitals, churches and other regional institutions. “We want society to be more aware of the benefits of correctly disposing of this type of waste to achieve more aware and sustainable production, which is the basis of our business. We also help increase income generation for our partners”, said Alexandre Pereira, JBS Biodiesel director.

 

By the end of the year, JBS Biodiesel will use around 30 million liters of used cooking oil as part of its production process. In addition to the Óleo Amigo program, the company also purchases recovered cooking oil from third parties.

 

Last year alone, JBS Biodiesel invested over R$ 5.5 million at its Lins plant to expand its biodiesel production capacity with the reuse of frying oil and other waste generated by the production chain, such as beef, pork and poultry tallow.
