JBS AMBIENTAL RECYCLES OVER 6 THOUSAND TONS OF PLASTIC ANNUALLY

Division also reuses over 4 thousand tons of cardboard

Sao Paulo, December 17, 2018 – JBS, the world’s largest protein processor, is also one of Brazil’s biggest plastic recyclers. It recycles 6.4 thousand tons of plastic each year.

As a comparison, this is equivalent to 1.07 billion supermarket bags, or approximately 376.5 million 30-liter trash bags.

JBS Ambiental has implemented a closed cycle for plastics that innovates at each of the three stages in this process. First, virgin resin is purchased to make food bags for JBS Carnes.

When it is disposed of, the packaging is returned to JBS Ambiental and is converted into covers for the pallets used by JBS Couros. Once the covers have been used, they are sent back to JBS Ambiental and converted into trash bags which are then distributed to every JBS plant in Brazil. The secret to its success is to keep the plastic in the company’s production chain as long as possible

“Our main goal is to keep the plastic in the company’s production chain for as long as possible, adding value to the resulting products, resources and materials, which reduces waste and provides overall sustainability gains”, said Susana Carvalho, JBS Ambiental director.

In addition to reusing plastic, JBS Ambiental also recycles over 4 thousand tons of cardboard from JBS units every year.
